Chapter Fourteen
Dr. Stanford came into Primâs shop late Tuesday morning looking for an anniversary present for his wife. It had been a slow day at Primâs Corner, and there was no one else in the store at that moment. Prim had been relieved by the lack of customers. Sheâd awakened at 5:00 a.m. with a mild case of nausea and a pain in her stomach. She was not at her best and wasnât in a cheerful mood.
Prim said nothing to the doctor about how she was feeling. If she got worse, she could always walk across the street or call him. He was there as her customer, and it was up to her to assist him.
After sheâd helped the man choose a lovely framed print that talked about the beauty of couples sharing their lives together, he paid for it and waited as she found a box and wrapped the gift. As she selected a bow for the top of the box, he asked, âHave you thought any more about seeing a therapist?â
Prim stopped what she was doing and turned to face him. He seemed very serious, and she frowned. When she reminded him that she wasnât afraid to be touched by Sean any longer, he nodded but told her that wasnât the only reason she needed to talk to a therapist.
âDoes everyone in todayâs world have to see a therapist to live their lives?â she asked with a slight edge in her voice.
âOf course not. But some people benefit more than others. Remy prefers to talk to Caleb, as you know. Thatâs fine as long as the counselor has training, which Caleb does. The counselor needs to be experienced, and the person who needs help has to continue to be making progress.â
âIâm making progress,â she said defensively. âIâm stable.â
âYes, but youâve had some huge adjustments in the last few months. There are still so many childhood issues you need to sort through, and youâve lost Buddy. Buddy was like a father to you, and I get the impression youâve swept your grief for him under the rug because of your anger over all the lies. I just wish youâd talk to someone about everything. Please donât discount the benefits of sharing your burdens with someone whoâs trained to help.â
Continuing to feel queasy, Prim placated the doctor by telling him she wouldnât rule it out and attached the bow to his wifeâs present. Once heâd gone, she flipped the sign in the window, went in the bathroom, and threw up. She felt better afterwards and sipped some water, used a small amount of the mouthwash she kept in the back room, and then returned to the shop.
When 5:00 arrived, Prim shut down her store and walked to Aurora Hardware. Caleb had pulled the shades in the windows and was counting the till. He informed her that the store had done a great business all day.
âItâs all of those people who had New Yearâs resolutions,â he suggested. âThey had long lists of household projects that theyâve been putting off.
